How these estimates are calculated

Place, currency and tax. Prices are for New Zealand, in NZD (NZ$). They exclude GST. Many New Zealand sources do not say whether their prices include GST, so treating them as excluding it is an assumption. The range is a national average, and the same range applies in every region: we found no reliable data on price differences between them. The calculator does not quote below its minimum price, NZ$180 at the national average.

Where the range comes from. The market range for this job comes from prices published for New Zealand by pro directories and businesses on their own price lists. We name these sources by type, not by company. Where no New Zealand source prices a job, we derive its range from the US range, scaled to New Zealand prices, and record it as an assumption. We check the hourly rates against Stats NZ earnings data and the minimum wage. A trade's rate should sit well above what its workers earn, because it also pays for overhead, travel and insurance.

When we checked. We last checked these rates against their sources on 30 September 2026.

Market price and your price. "What pros charge" is the market range for the job you describe. Your own cost figures do not change it. The table under it, "Your costs at this price", uses your figures: time on the job, labour cost, materials, equipment, travel, fees and overhead. Profit is the market price minus those costs. If no market range covers the job, the calculator prices it from your costs instead: your costs plus overhead, then your target margin or markup.

Plumbing quotes go wrong when the price is set before the access is understood. The calculator above starts from the New Zealand hourly rate and the hours the job takes, then adds what the reality of the site does to it — and shows what the price leaves you.

How the calculator works

  1. Pick the job. Each job carries a price band in NZ dollars for the finished work, parts included.
  2. Say how hard it is to reach. A tight cupboard, a wall or a floor slab adds hours to the same job, and several fixtures or a run of pipe adds more.
  3. Your region. Every region uses the national figures. Auckland and Wellington operators publish the same NZ$120 hourly rate, so we found no reliable basis for a regional index.
  4. Check what you keep. Open “Your costs and margin” for hours, parts and profit at that price.

Where the other job prices come from

Only drain clearing and hot water cylinder replacement above were collected from New Zealand price lists. For the rest — taps, leaks, sewer lines — no New Zealand operator we could accept publishes a price for the finished job. Those bands are the US ranges of August 2026 scaled by 1.20, the ratio of New Zealand to US plumbing rates at that time, NZ$120 against US$100 an hour. They are estimates, and the honest way to use them is to check the hours against your own experience before you send the quote.

Toilet installation is not offered here. No New Zealand source we could accept prices it, and the scaled US range does not fit New Zealand hourly rates. Price it as a custom job from your own hours and parts.

The cylinder band includes the cylinder. One operator sells a 180-litre mains-pressure cylinder on its own for NZ$1,130 excluding GST, and the calculator carries that as the parts inside the price.

Worked example

Clearing one blocked drain, easy access, standard hours, at the national average. The collected band is NZ$130 to NZ$391 excluding GST, an ordinary job sits in the lower half of it, and the calculator lands near NZ$220. Two hours of labour, consumables and the drive come off that — open the costs panel and set your own hourly cost, since the margin on a two-hour job is decided almost entirely by how far you drove to reach it.

Quoting plumbing work in New Zealand

  • Charge for the diagnosis. A paid call-out is easier to defend than a free visit you pay for. The operators we found either bundle it with the first hour or charge it as its own line on top of the hours.
  • Write the exclusions down. Making good after opening a wall, council consents and inspections are the three things clients assume are included.
  • Price gas separately. Gas labour bills higher than plumbing labour and carries certification of its own — quote it as its own line rather than averaging it into the job.

The calculator gives you the number. For typical rates and how to build a quote, read our US plumbing pricing guide. Its rates are in US dollars.

Frequently asked questions

What do plumbers charge per hour in New Zealand?

NZ$120 an hour excluding GST for plumbing labour. Two Auckland operators and one Wellington operator publish that figure and they agree to the cent; a Christchurch operator charges NZ$110. Gas work is dearer: one Auckland operator charges NZ$140 an hour for it. A local trade directory puts the wider range at NZ$95 to NZ$150 an hour.

Should I charge a call-out fee?

Yes, and New Zealand clients already expect one. An Auckland and a Wellington operator print a flat charge as its own line, NZ$60 and NZ$80 excluding GST. Their minimums land in the same place: one bills an hour plus NZ$60 for NZ$180, the other bundles the first visit at NZ$200.

What does clearing a blocked drain cost?

NZ$130 to NZ$391 excluding GST. Two independent New Zealand sources overlap on that range. It is one of the two job prices on this page collected from the market; the other is hot water cylinder replacement.

Are the other job prices here New Zealand market rates?

No, and this matters. Only drain clearing and hot water cylinder replacement were collected from New Zealand sources. Every other job price is the US range of August 2026 scaled by 1.20, the ratio of New Zealand to US plumbing rates at that time, NZ$120 against US$100 an hour. Treat those as estimates to check against your own hours, not as what the market charges.

How do I price after-hours work?

Published New Zealand surcharges are flat, not a multiplier: one Auckland operator adds NZ$180 outside standard hours and NZ$360 on a public holiday, on top of its normal hourly rate and call-out. The calculator's emergency setting multiplies the whole price band by 1.5 instead, parts included, so compare its number against your own flat surcharge and use whichever you can defend to the client.

Do I charge GST?

GST is 15% and every figure on this page excludes it. Registration is compulsory once your turnover reaches NZ$60,000 in the last 12 months, or you expect it to in the next 12. New Zealand plumbing price lists are normally published excluding GST and say so, so quote the same way.
