How these estimates are calculated
Place, currency and tax. Prices are for Australia, in AUD (A$). They include GST. Australian Consumer Law requires one all-inclusive price. The range is a national average. When you pick your state or territory, the calculator scales the labour share of the range by a local index from 0.85 to 1.11. The calculator does not quote below its minimum price, A$180 at the national average.
Where the range comes from. The market range for this job comes from prices published for Australia by marketplaces where customers hire pros. We name these sources by type, not by company. Where no Australian source prices a job, we derive its range from the US range, scaled to Australian prices, and record it as an assumption. We check the hourly rates against Fair Work award pay rates for cleaning, construction and plumbing. A trade's rate should sit well above what its workers earn, because it also pays for overhead, travel and insurance.
When we checked. We last checked these rates against their sources on 30 September 2026.
Market price and your price. "What pros charge" is the market range for the job you describe. Your own cost figures do not change it. The table under it, "Your costs at this price", uses your figures: time on the job, labour cost, materials, equipment, travel, fees and overhead. Profit is the market price without GST (10%) minus those costs, because GST is collected for the government, not earned. If no market range covers the job, the calculator prices it from your costs instead: your costs plus overhead, then your target margin or markup.
Plumbing quotes go wrong when the price is set before the access is understood. The calculator above builds the quote
from hours, then adds what the reality of the site does to them.
How the calculator works
- Pick the job. Each job carries the labour and parts the work usually needs.
- Say how hard it is to reach. An open cupboard, a tight cavity and a slab are three different jobs with the same
name. Access adds the hours.
- Your state. Six states and two territories, each with its own labour-cost index. New South Wales carries the
highest, about 11% above the national average.
- Check what you keep. Open “Your costs and margin” for labour, parts at what you paid, the trip charge and any
permits against the quote.
What Australian plumbers charge for their time, 2026
| What | Figure, GST included | Basis |
|---|
| Hourly, low to high | A$80–200 | Published by a marketplace for hiring tradies |
| Typical hourly | A$120 | A second marketplace’s average from real quotes, A$120.64 |
| Call-out fee | A$60–150 | Business hours; up to about A$250 after hours |
| Award floor, Tradesperson Level 1 | A$29.45 permanent, A$36.81 casual | MA000036, from 1 July 2026 |
| Award floor with registration allowances | A$32.60 permanent, A$40.75 casual | A$3.15 an hour, payable for all purposes |
Every price figure includes 10% GST, as the Australian Consumer Law requires. The award rates are wages, so they
carry no GST. The calculator also has an after-hours switch that multiplies the whole price band by one and a half,
parts included, because a Saturday night call is not a Tuesday morning one.
About the per-job prices. Australian plumbing guides publish prices for four of the five jobs in the calculator,
and the ranges come from them: A$150–400 to replace a tap, A$100–300 to repair a leak, A$250–800 to install a toilet
and A$1,000–2,500 to replace a hot water system. The drain clear is the one range scaled from the US. A leak repair
often lands on the A$180 minimum, which is the call-out plus the first hour.
Worked example
A drain clear in a single-storey house, easy access. The calculator puts the going rate at A$285 including GST,
inside a range of A$225–345. About A$26 of that is GST if you are registered, so A$259 stays with you.
Against that, the calculator’s starting costs: two hours on site at A$48 an hour, A$30 of parts, A$12 for the drive
and 18% overhead. The job costs you A$162.84 and leaves about A$96, a 37% margin.
Move the same job behind a wall or under a slab and the calculator adds an hour and a half on site, which is the
whole reason it asks about access before it prices anything.
Quoting plumbing work in Australia
- Quote the diagnosis separately. The call-out fee pays for attending, and the hours bill on top of it. Say so
in the quote, so the client does not expect the fee to come off the repair. A free visit is one you pay for.
- Write the exclusions down. Making good after opening a wall, permits and council inspections are the three
things a client assumes are included.
- Charge properly for after-hours. Australian clients expect a night rate. The mistake is not charging one, it is
not saying so until the invoice.
The calculator gives you the number. For typical rates and how to build a quote, read our US plumbing pricing guide. Its rates are in US dollars.
Frequently asked questions
What do plumbers charge per hour in Australia?
Licensed plumbers charge A$80–200 an hour in 2026, with A$120 the typical figure. Two Australian marketplaces agree: one prints the A$80–200 band, the other an average of A$120.64 from real quotes. Both figures include GST.
Should I charge a call-out fee?
Yes. A$60–150 is what Australian plumbers charge to attend in business hours, and up to about A$250 after hours. Some plumbers include the first hour of work in the fee. It is the fee that protects you on the job that turns out to be five minutes of work and forty minutes of driving.
Do these prices include GST?
Yes. Section 48 of the Australian Consumer Law requires one all-inclusive price for a consumer, so every figure here and in the calculator includes 10% GST. Under A$75,000 of turnover you do not have to register for GST. If you register anyway, you charge it.
What is the award floor for a plumber?
The Plumbing Award MA000036, in force from 1 July 2026, sets a Tradesperson Level 1 at A$29.45 an hour for a permanent employee and A$36.81 for a casual with the 25% loading. Three allowances are payable for all purposes — industry A$41.41 a week, plumbing trade A$33.57, registration A$44.76 — which is A$119.74 a week or A$3.15 an hour. So a registered plumber's real floor is A$32.60 an hour, or A$40.75 casual.
Where do the per-job prices come from?
Four of the five come from prices Australian plumbing guides publish per job: tap replacement, leak repair, toilet installation and hot water system replacement. The drain clear is the exception. No marketplace prices it as a job, so its range is the US one scaled to Australian rates, and one Australian guide's A$150–500 agrees with it. The calculator shows the range for the job you pick, then moves it for access, scope and after-hours work.
How much do I mark up parts?
We do not publish an Australian markup figure, and there is a trap in the ones you will find. Sources mix up gross margin and markup, and they are not the same number: a 40% gross margin is a 66.7% markup. Work out which one you mean before you set it, because the difference is your wage.
