How these estimates are calculated
Place, currency and tax. Prices are for the United States, in USD ($). They exclude sales tax. Whether a service is taxed, and at what rate, depends on the state. The range is a national average. When you pick your state, the calculator scales the labor share of the range by a local index from 0.65 to 1.35. The calculator does not quote below its minimum price, $165 at the national average.
Where the range comes from. The market range for this job comes from prices published for the United States by marketplaces where customers hire pros and price guides. We name these sources by type, not by company. We check the hourly rates against Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data. A trade's rate should sit well above what its workers earn, because it also pays for overhead, travel and insurance.
When we checked. We last checked these rates against their sources on August 22, 2026.
Market price and your price. "What pros charge" is the market range for the job you describe. Your own cost figures do not change it. The table under it, "Your costs at this price", uses your figures: time on the job, labor cost, materials, equipment, travel, fees and overhead. Profit is the market price minus those costs. If no market range covers the job, the calculator prices it from your costs instead: your costs plus overhead, then your target margin or markup.
Plumbing margins leak in predictable places: quotes anchored to a day rate, emergency work billed like a Tuesday
afternoon, and access surprises eaten in silence. The calculator above starts from what US plumbing businesses
charge for the job you pick and moves the quote for exactly those factors.
How the calculator works
- The job sets the band. Each job type carries a published price band (a drain clear isn’t a water-heater
install). Extra hours extend the band; the emergency toggle applies a 1.5× premium.
- Access and scope narrow it. Open and easy? The quote sits low in the band. Behind a wall, or several
fixtures? It moves up — the same questions you’d answer looking at the job.
- Your state. The result is adjusted by a state labor-cost index.
- Your economics. “Your costs and margin” shows labor, parts at cost, trip and permits against the market
price — margin and overhead settings price custom jobs the bands don’t cover.
Typical plumbing job prices in 2026
| Job | Hours the calculator assumes | Typical price, parts included |
|---|
| Drain unclogging | 2 | $190–$290 |
| Faucet replacement | 2 | $280–$435 |
| Leak repair (accessible) | 2 | $195–$315 |
| Toilet installation | 2.5 | $445–$630 |
| Water heater replacement (40-gallon tank) | 4.5 | $1,025–$1,405 |
Prices are for one fixture with easy access; awkward access or several fixtures move the quote up the band. Parts
quality moves these ranges more than labor does — a builder-grade faucet and a designer one are the same
install with very different invoices.
Worked example
A tank water-heater replacement in an awkward spot, with more than one fixture touched and an extra hour for a
code-required expansion tank: the market band for this install, with the extra hour, runs $970–$1,920, and the harder access pushes the
quote to about $1,730 (range $1,540–$1,920). Your costs — parts, permit, and roughly 9.6 hours of labor — run
about $1,245, leaving around $485 (28% margin). The “Fill with sample data” button loads this exact job.
Tips for profitable plumbing quotes
- Diagnose before you commit to a number. A “simple leak” behind tile is a different job — quote after you’ve
seen it, or quote a diagnostic fee first.
- Put the warranty in the price. If you warranty labor for a year, a callback rate of even 5% is a real cost —
your margin, not your wage, is what pays for it.
- Show Good / Better / Best. Repair vs. replace, standard vs. premium fixture: three options anchor the middle
one and lift the average ticket without pressure.

Frequently asked questions
How much should a plumber charge per hour?
Billed plumbing rates in the US run $45–$200 per hour. Journeyman plumbers average about $90 and masters about $120. Your billed rate must cover the truck, tools, insurance, licensing, and callbacks — not just the hour on site.
What is a fair service call fee?
Published trip fees run $50–$300, and the calculator uses $75–$125 as a reference point inside that range. The fee pays for the trip, and the hours bill on top of it. It filters out price-shoppers and pays for the drive and diagnosis.
How much should I mark up plumbing parts?
No independent US source publishes a standard plumbing parts markup, so the calculator does not assume one. Whatever you add has to pay for sourcing, stocking, warranty risk, and return trips — parts at cost is a discount you're giving away.
How should I price emergency or after-hours calls?
1.5×–2× the standard labor rate is typical for nights, weekends, and holidays. The calculator applies 1.5× to the whole job price, parts included, when you toggle the emergency option — clients paying for a 2 a.m. burst pipe expect a premium, so don't be shy about charging it.
Should I quote flat-rate or time and materials?
Flat-rate wins residential work: homeowners want certainty, and you keep the upside when the job goes smoothly. Estimate hours with this calculator, add your parts at what you paid for them, and present one price.
