How these estimates are calculated

Place, currency and tax. Prices are for Canada, in CAD (C$). They exclude GST, HST and any provincial tax. Which of them applies, and at what rate, depends on the province and, for provincial tax, on the kind of service. The range is a national average. When you pick your province, the calculator scales the labour share of the range by a local index from 0.85 to 1.24. The calculator does not quote below its minimum price, C$130 at the national average.

Where the range comes from. The market range for this job comes from prices published for Canada by marketplaces where customers hire pros. We name these sources by type, not by company. We check the hourly rates against Job Bank wage data, and for lawn care the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association wage survey. A trade's rate should sit well above what its workers earn, because it also pays for overhead, travel and insurance.

When we checked. We last checked these rates against their sources on September 30, 2026.

Market price and your price. "What pros charge" is the market range for the job you describe. Your own cost figures do not change it. The table under it, "Your costs at this price", uses your figures: time on the job, labour cost, materials, equipment, travel, fees and overhead. Profit is the market price minus those costs. If no market range covers the job, the calculator prices it from your costs instead: your costs plus overhead, then your target margin or markup.

Most handyman quotes in Canada are lost or won on the first number. The calculator above starts from published Canadian rates for the job in front of you, then shows what that price leaves you once labour, parts and travel are counted.

How the calculator works

  1. Pick the job. Each job type carries a Canadian price band in CAD for the finished work.
  2. Enter your hours and parts. The band depends on the job type only. Your hours and parts set your costs, so they move the margin at the band price. For “Something else” they set the price itself.
  3. Your province. Rates are scaled by a provincial labour-cost index built from Job Bank wages, from 0.85 in New Brunswick to 1.24 in Nunavut.
  4. Check what you keep. Open “Your costs and margin” to see the profit at the market price.

Worked example

A drywall repair in Ontario billed at the market price: the national band is C$300–750, and the Ontario index scales its labour share to C$290–730. The calculator sets about seven hours and C$40 in materials, and the quote lands near C$510 before HST. At C$34 an hour in labour cost, plus travel and overhead, your costs are about C$332, so you keep roughly C$178.

Quoting handyman work in Canada

  • Set the minimum before the drive. A C$130 minimum is normal and it is easier to state on the phone than to explain on site.
  • Quote the list, not the day. Clients book handymen for three or four small tasks; price each one so adding a fifth is a conversation about money, not a favour.
  • Put access in the quote. Condo elevators, parking and building booking windows eat hours in Canadian cities — say what is included.

The calculator gives you the number. For typical rates and how to build a quote, read our US handyman pricing guide. Its rates are in US dollars.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal handyman hourly rate in Canada?

Self-employed handymen charge C$55–90 an hour across most of Canada in 2026, with general repair work usually billed at C$55–70. The Greater Toronto Area runs higher, C$75–150 an hour, and specialised work like drywall or basic electrical sits at the top of the range.

Should I have a minimum charge?

Yes. Most independent handymen in Canada set a C$100–150 minimum that covers travel and the first hour. Without it, a twenty-minute job costs you money once you count the drive.

Do I quote by the hour or by the job?

Quote a flat price per job whenever you have done the work before. Clients compare flat prices more easily, and you stop being punished for working quickly. Keep hourly for diagnostic and open-ended work.

How much do I mark up materials?

A 15–30% markup on parts is standard for Canadian handymen. It covers the trip to the supplier, your float and the warranty you carry on the part.

Do I charge GST or HST?

Once you pass C$30,000 in revenue over four quarters you must register and charge GST or HST at your province's rate. Provincial tax also applies to some of this work: 6% PST on repairs and installation in a building in Saskatchewan, and 7% RST on plumbing and electrical repairs in Manitoba. Below that you can stay a small supplier, but registering early lets you claim input tax credits on tools and materials.
